Food Intolerance Testing Made Easy

Published on 12 April, 2023

Food intolerance is becoming increasingly common in the Western world. While there is no definitive data on the prevalence of food intolerance, some studies suggest that it is on the rise.

One possible explanation for this increase is that people are consuming more processed and packaged foods, which often contain additives and preservatives that can trigger intolerance symptoms. Additionally, the use of antibiotics and other medications that disrupt the gut microbiome may also play a role in the development of food intolerance.

Another factor contributing to the rise of food intolerance is increased awareness and diagnosis of the condition. More people are recognising the symptoms of food intolerance and seeking medical attention, which has led to more accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Individuals with a food intolerance may display, amongst others, one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Flatulence, constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, burping, trapped wind.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease
  • Weight Gain
  • Headache / Migraines
  • Inflammatory skin diseases (neurodermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, breakouts)
  • Streaming and itchy eyes, hay fever, asthma, recurring colds, blocked nose and sinuses
  • Tonsillitis and middle-ear infections
  • Joint pain
  • Thyroid problems
  • Mood swings
  • Restlessness, poor concentration
  • Notice that certain foods are not well tolerated and fasting reduces these symptoms.

You can strengthen your immune system by identifying the foods your body mistakes as harmful ones. If you can identify the foods that your immune system is fighting and treating as foreign agents, which are limiting your resources to fight real infectious agents (like viruses, bacteria, parasites, toxins etc.) this may significantly improve your overall immunity.

If you suspect you have a food intolerance, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider. They can help determine the cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate testing and treatment.

The Academy of Nutritional Medicine offer a comprehensive food intolerance test called ImuPro.

Using ImuPro can help you discover if a food intolerance underlies these symptoms. It involves testing for elevated levels of specific total IgG antibodies and then the patient can carry out an individual change in diet based on the IgG findings.

It is a simple procedure that a patient can do him or herself or carried out by a patient’s therapist or phlebotomist. We provide a small kit and then a pinprick of blood can be taken from the thumb or wherever suitable. The sample is then sent off to the laboratory for testing.

You will receive an extensive report on all the results along with advice on how best to deal with any intolerances found, including an optional recipe book tailored to your personal findings.

WHAT MAKES IMUPRO DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FOOD INTOLERANCE TESTS?

  • ImuPro tests for IgG 1 – 4 antibodies. Many other widely available food intolerance tests just test for IgG 4, which could result in a false negative result for a patient.
  • ImuPro can test for reactions against up to 270 potential antigens.
  • Most antigens in the ImuPro test are foods, but also included are Candida Albicans yeast and aspergillus niger, a mould that grows on some grains during storage. This can highlight a separate reason for intolerance to certain grains that would not otherwise show up in tests for the specific foods only.
  • The food proteins used in the test are organic. This avoids potential cross-reactivity with pesticides, fungicides and herbicides that could occur with intolerance tests that use conventionally farmed foods for testing.
  • Detailed test results show the strength of the immune system reaction to a food, graded from weak to strong, allowing you to prioritise food elimination to improve compliance.
  • Depending on the level of test chosen, they can be accompanied by a personalised food rotation plan and an optional recipe book, all of which exclude foods that ImuPro has revealed as causing intolerances. You can also choose to exclude other foods from these, regardless of the ImuPro findings – for example, due to previous diagnoses such as a food allergy (IgE mediated).
